Getting to know Silver Albino Arowana Fish

The silver arowana is a bony freshwater fish native to the Amazon River Basin of South America. They are also known as dragon fish, monkey fish, and are sometimes incorrectly spelled as arawana and arahuana. This fish is loved by many aquarists.

Arowana fish are great strong swimmers and can be quite aggressive at times. They are predatory fish that can grow to almost a meter (sometimes more) and weigh about 3 kg. When kept, silver arowana can live 10-15 years.

If you come across them in the wild, you can see their unique hunting style. They have large jumps that allow them to hunt animals on low plant branches.

They also have the ability to survive short periods of time out of water using their swim bladder. If you are looking for a pet arowana, then silver arowana is one of the most popular, widely available everywhere, and the price is more affordable.

Their large size, unique nature, and long life make them suitable to be kept by experienced aquarists.

Appearance

Silver arowana is a fish that is much sought after and collected by people. They are large and silver in color, and can grow up to 1.2 meters in the wild, but when kept at home they can grow to about 1 meter. About weight, the average arowana weighs about 2.5-3 kg when fully grown, some individuals can weigh more.

Its most prominent characteristic is its jaw. Referred to as a ‘drawbridge,’ their mouths are nearly vertical. There are large silver scales like pearls all over their bodies. As a teenager, these scales can be bluish in color.

Their long, slender bodies are flat when viewed from the side, and if you look closely, you will see that their backs are almost fused to their tail fins. Females are generally ‘thicker’ and males are slimmer and have larger anal fins.

Caring for Silver Arowana fish when born are about 10 cm in size after their egg sac is consumed, but then grow very quickly. During the first year they will grow 5 cm every month, so you need to make sure they are well fed and have plenty of space in their tank.
