Guppy Fish, Types, and Care

Guppy or fish of a thousand is the most popular ornamental fish in the world. Guppies are small fish that live in groups with unique and diverse color patterns. This fish is a fish that is easily found in small rivers or lakes. In Indonesia itself, these fish even live freely in the trenches. This type of wild fish that turns into ornamental fish is very easy to adapt to its environment. Even this fish can live in brackish water which has a high salt content. This mini fish was discovered by Robert John Lechmere Guppy in Trinidad in 1966. Albert CLG Gunther named the fish  Girardinus guppii  in honor of its discoverer but was first introduced by Wilhelm Peters in 1859 under the name Poecilia reticulata. Even so this fish has been popular with the name “Guppy”.

Spread

This fish originating from Central America spreads Kep. Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Netherlands Antilles, Kep. Virgin, Brazilian and Venezuelan. This fish was brought to all continents in the world except Antarctica through trade routes. Then live wild in free waters. Guppy began to enter Indonesia as an ornamental fish around the 1920s. To eradicate malaria mosquito larvae, many Guppy fish are released into open waters. But these efforts failed because in the wild the body only grows to 35 mm, while in the aquarium it can reach 60 mm. In 1929, it was noted that Guppy fish can be found in almost all waters in West Java.

Distinguishing Males & Females

Guppy fish male and female are very easy to distinguish. Male guppies are generally smaller than news guppies. The male guppy can measure about 2.5 – 3 cm while the female guppy can reach 4 – 6 cm. In addition, male guppy usually have long anal guppy while female guppy has short and rounded anal. Male guppy color is brighter than female guppy which is mostly transparent. The female guppy is also seen to have a full body with a fat stomach.

Reproduction

Guppies are very easy to breed fish. The gestation period is only about 21-30 days. Guppy fish are fish that do not lay eggs but give birth to their children (livebearers). After the female is fertilized, the gravid spot will expand and the color will darken. The fish that will be born will have their eyes visible on the transparent belly of the guppy mother. Guppies can give birth to up to 100 individuals but only about 30 usually survive.

After birth, the baby guppy is ready to find its own food and avoid its enemies. Baby Guppies will automatically join the group. However, larger adult guppy fish sometimes prey on these baby guppy fish. Therefore, it is necessary to separate the baby guppy from the adult guppy. The male guppy’s anal fin is capable of releasing sperm that will enter the female guppy’s body. While the female guppy has the ability to store sperm so that in one mating she will be able to get pregnant several times.
