Blue Gourami, we often know by the name of blue sepat or swamp sepat has the scientific name Trichogaster trichopterus. Fish with a flat body and a narrow pointed snout, up to 120mm in total length. The color is opaque silver, bluish or greenish, with several dark oblique bands, and a black spot each on the middle of the sides of the body and at the base of the tail. Its name in English, Three spot gourami , refers to the two dark spots, plus the eye as the third spot. Tail fin grooved (split) shallow, mottled.

Blue Gourami Ornamental Fish are also called Labyrinth Fish, which means they breathe directly from the air and must have access to the surface of the aquarium.

The existence of a labyrinth organ ( labyrinth ) in the gill space, which is very useful to help breathe oxygen directly from the air. The existence of this labyrinth allows the fish to live in oxygen-poor places such as swamps, rice fields and others.

 

This fish is most often found in the Indonesian ornamental fish market . The color of this blue gourami can change significantly, sometimes it looks more real and sometimes paler, depending on the mood of the fish. Usually the color of the Blue Gourami Ornamental Fish will be more real and dark when it enters the spawning stage.

 

 

The Original Habitat of Blue Gourami Ornamental Fish

Sepat swamp spread in Indochina, especially in the Mekong River valley, and in western Indonesia, namely in Sumatra, Kalimantan and Java. Around 1938, this sepat was incorporated into Lake Tondano and other places in Sulawesi.

 

This Blue Gourami before becoming an ornamental fish lived originally in swamps, lakes, calm water streams, and generally wetlands in the lowlands including rice fields and irrigation canals. During the flood season, the distribution is widespread following this flood flow. Blue Gourami prey on zooplankton, small crustaceans and various insect larvae. During the breeding season, the male fish builds a foam nest to accommodate and care for the eggs of the female shovel, which he guards aggressively.
