This apistogramma should be kept in an aquarium of at least 30 gallons, with plenty of aquatic plants. In addition to requiring an open area for swimming, these fish also need a hiding place. Gravel or sand is also recommended. Although it is a semi-aggressive fish, this fish is quite shy and should not be combined with large and aggressive fish.
Apistogramma are “egg layer” (fish that reproduce by laying their eggs) and usually prefer to lay their eggs in “caves”. If the female is not ready to “mate” and the male is ready, the male fish will harass the female until she is ready for it. The female will reciprocate the behavior of the male if the egg has been laid and the female nesting cave is felt to be too narrow.
Apistogramma is a carnivorous fish, and will eat a variety of feeds. Frozen worms, dried worms, pellets, live shrimp and frozen shrimp, as well as silk worms are suitable feed for this fish.
