Cichlid Butterfly | Anomalochromis thomasi
The African butterfly cichlid (Anomalochromis thomasi) is a rather unique cichlid. Their temperament, size, and even geographic origins all go against most expectations of this type of fish. Their small size and unusual nature (for a cichlid) make them great pets.
Size
When fish are measured, the standard length is measured from the front of the head to the base of the tail (without fins). African butterfly cichlids measure about 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.6 centimeters). Their size places them in the category of dwarf cichlids. However, the term “pygmy cichlids” usually refers to species from South and Central America, while African butterfly cichlids are native to coastal rivers in Africa.
Tank Size and Arrangement
The small size of the African cichlid butterfly allows it to feel comfortable in a relatively small aquarium. A pair can comfortably share a 30-gallon tank, although they may be somewhat territorial towards additional members of their own kind, especially when breeding. They prefer a tropical temperature range of 77 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit (23 to 27 degrees Celsius). Also, they prefer a pH of 7.5 or slightly alkaline. They generally do not interfere with live greenery, unlike most cichlids, which makes them ideal for tanks with many plants, such as Dutch and Amano style aquariums. .
Compatible Small Cichlids
They are compatible with other small cichlids of the same general area, such as the cribbia, or crib, which have similar care requirements. The bed is small and peaceful; a pair will go well with African butterfly cichlids. Jeweled cichlids, while similar to African butterflies, will also make compatible tankmates. Outside of the cichlid family, any small, peaceful fish will do well with the African butterfly cichlid.
Tank Friends to Avoid
Cichlids of similar size from South America, such as rams and various species of Apistograma, should probably be avoided; they may have a behavior mismatch. African cichlids from Rift Valley Lakes (which most people call “African cichlids”) should be avoided; they prefer water with a higher pH. You should also avoid keeping more than a pair of African butterfly cichlids as they may fight. Outside the cichlid family, large, aggressive or predatory fish should be avoided.
