The Ram cichlid ( Microgeophagus ramirezi ) is a popular ornamental fish species that has been bred to include a wide variety of strains. This strain is marketed under various names, such as Ram, butterfly cichlid, Asian ram, and Ramirez’s dwarf cichlid . Among Indonesian ram fans, this beautiful colorful fish is usually referred to as ramirezi fish.

Despite the many names for this species of fish, there are actually only four different types of ram. They are Bolivian ram, electric blue ram, German blue ram, and golden ram. The last three types are sometimes available in long-finned or balloon variations but still fall into the same category.

How many types of ram cichlid are there?

There are many different strains of ram that have been developed in the ornamental fish industry and different variations of each fish. All come from the family Cichlidae and the original fish Microgeophagus ramirezi. Below are some of the most common and most beautiful types of ram cichlids.

Electric Blue Ram

Of all the ram cichlids, the electric blue has the strongest appearance. This may be due to his striking red eyes combined with a sparkling electric blue color. The dorsal fin is pointed and they have a low slung pectoral fin. They are smaller than the Bolivian ram and measure about 6 cm.

Even though it looks fierce, the electric blue ram has an awesome personality. They are social and peaceful, making them ideal community aquarium inhabitants. They are best kept in pairs where they will usually be loyal to one another.
