Black Moor | Carassius auratus

The Black Moor is a goldfish with twin tails and a round or egg-shaped body. The unique eye shape makes this fish favored by many ornamental fish hobbyists. It has large protruding eyes on the sides of its head. The Black Moor is basically a black version of the Telescope Eye goldfish.

As the name suggests, this fish comes in only one color, namely black. However the color of the scale can range from light gray to dark black. Miraculously some Black Moors may not always stay black forever as they can revert to a metallic orange when kept in warmer water.

The majority of Black Moors are kept in aquariums, not ponds, as their eyesight is far from perfect. Specimens currently available have broad tails, ribbon tails or butterfly tails. This fish includes fish that are very calm and can be one tank with other non-aggressive goldfish. Black Moors can reach a length of about 4-8 inches. The average lifespan of these fish is 10-15 years if kept in a well-maintained aquarium.

Black Moor’s Vision

His protruding eyes cause him to have poor eyesight making him prone to injury and infection. These Black Moors are not good competitors for food because they don’t swim very fast. It’s pretty obvious that you can mix it up with other less aggressive varieties of cheffish to avoid starving or getting hit.

Also avoid adding sharp objects in the aquarium such as plants or rocks that can cause injury. Black Moor requires more care than other varieties.

Tankmate for Black Moor

Mixing Black Moor together with other egg-shaped goldfish like Ryukin or Fantail is the best option. All slow twin tails are suitable Tankmates. Strongly not recommended with the faster swimming single-tailed goldfish varieties. Better tankmates for Black Moor are like Telescope Eye, Celestial Eye, or Bubble Eye goldfish
