Barb Checkered | Capoeta oligolepis

Checker Barb is one of the proudest fish species in Indonesia because it is only found in Sumatra. Fish with the scientific name Puntius oligolepis is better known as the Checker barb, Checkerboarf barb, Checkered barb and Island barb.

This fish can grow up to 5cm. In the wild, the checker barb’s natural habitat is at the bottom of rivers or lakes and lives by eating a variety of small animals such as worms, shrimp and various mosses. For maintenance in the aquarium this fish is easy to adapt to eating pellets and silk worms, but this fish is not suitable to be kept in an aquascape , because it can eat aquatic plants. This native fish of Maninjau lake lives in groups or scrolls and is a favorite ornamental fish in the world. Its peaceful nature is a distinct advantage for ornamental fish hobbyists, apart from being very easy to maintain.

For water quality Checker barb fish require water with a temperature of around 24-28C and an acidic to neutral pH ranging from 6-7.5. Checker barb fish farming has excellent opportunities. Even this fish is still a prima donna for the export market because this fish is difficult to breed in cold areas such as America, Europe and Australia. These three are the biggest importers of this fish.
